LipiFlow will be available at both our Medford and Cambridge offices this month!

A Breakthrough in Treating Dry Eyes

There are 25 years of research supporting the clinical science behind the leading cause and treatment for dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Gland blockages that occur due to MGD can be cleared most effectively by the gentle heating and massaging of the inner and outer eyelid. This is formally known as thermal pulsation treatment, and LipiFlow is the only FDA-approved device to provide both inner and outer lid therapy.

 What is LipiFlow?

LipiFlow is a treatment device designed for removing blockages from the meibomian glands, allowing them to function and produce the oils that constitute the top protective lipid layer of your tear film. LipiFlow is quickly becoming the standard of care for MGD, with studies demonstrating its effective and safe results. This treatment involves minimal patient discomfort, requiring only a 12-minute in-office treatment per eye that most patients experience as the feeling of a gentle massaging of their eyelids.

How Does LipiFlow Work?

LipiFlow activators are single-use sterile devices that deliver therapeutic energies to the meibomian glands, while still protecting the delicate structures of your eye. The activators are placed over and under the eyelids but are contoured just above your cornea so that they avoid contact with the eye surface. The placement and treatment of the activators on the eyes is a simple process that is usually done with minimal discomfort.

Once our optometrists place the activators on your eyes, treatment begins. The LipiFlow activator delivers heat and gentle pressure to the inner lids, along with a therapeutic motion on the outer lid to safely remove any gland blockages. The entire treatment takes about 12 minutes while results are seen 6-8 weeks after treatment.
